We are so fortunate to have Dr. Allan Crandell and his wife Rita share with us their photos and journey to Bhutan. They went to Bhutan under the auspices of Health Volunteers Overseas, a volunteer medical project linking Western clinicians and physicians with Bhutan, generally connected with the Jigme Dorji Wangchuk National Referral Hospital in Thimphu, the capital of Bhutan. Besides seeing and treating patients, they also hiked on weekends and most hikes end up on top of a hill at a Buddhist monastery or nunnery. They had the good fortune to be able to travel to the eastern, more rural part of Bhutan, graced by sightings of the rare and endangered black-necked cranes. They visited the Haa Valley, mountain passes where the Eastern Himalayas are stunningly in view and Punakha, which is a verdant, warm valley with oranges, mangoes and poinsettias in profusion. They will share photos and discuss their trip.
